**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been shy and reserved, taking the plunge into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it as a time of growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is often a significant concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. During my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I’m pleased to say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These relationships have become like a second family, both within my field of study and throughout the university. What was my secret to this? Taking that critical first step. Engaging in conversations with others facing similar circumstances was essential.
If you’re feeling anxious about this, rest assured—there will be numerous icebreakers and events designed to help you meet new people. And remember, the most important thing is to be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the escalated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the leap from the first term to the second term proved particularly taxing. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others appearing to navigate their studies effortlessly.
What aided me in this process was understanding that everyone is encountering similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most valuable lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of asking for help—whether from peers or faculty.
### Support from Faculty and Well-being Resources
On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the Materials department is. The lecturers and support personnel are genuinely invested in our success and are empathetic to the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication lines open throughout the year, addressing any issues we bring up.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, but it turned out to be one of my best choices. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which has been tremendously valuable.
There are various avenues to connect with staff and seek help, and I strongly encourage students to make the most of these resources. The support and resources offered are there for a reason—don’t hesitate to take advantage of them!
### Essential Lessons from My First Year
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I experienced—both leading up to and during university—was mostly unwarranted. With a broad array of support systems from faculty to fellow students, I was never truly isolated.
I’ve gained skills in managing the stress from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and fun. Most importantly, I’ve evolved as an individual, stepping beyond my comfort zone and embracing the obstacles that came my way.
To anyone on the verge of starting university: take that plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll find your niche, just as I did.
