**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I encountered a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had long been introverted and quiet, plunging into university life felt like a big challenge. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and abundant joy, I realize just how impactful this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was connecting with others. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.

These bonds didn’t materialize instantly, but started with small actions—like initiating casual conversations with others who were equally anxious. Gradually, these ties evolved into what feels like an extended family. My recommendation? Take that brave step at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreakers and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was quite evident, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. At times, it was easy to become overwhelmed or doubt my capabilities, especially when measuring myself against my peers.

What proved most beneficial was coming to the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was in similar circumstances, and if I was struggling to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were too. Learning to seek assistance was a turning point. Whether it was reaching out to fellow students or faculty, asking questions significantly changed the game. If I could impart one piece of wisdom to new students, it would be this: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly want students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and providing help.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the final part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I embraced an opportunity as a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. This experience was priceless, and I urge others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal positions or informal exchanges, building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely beneficial. Remember, the support exists—don’t hesitate to utilize it.

### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has imparted invaluable lessons. I’ve discovered that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often baseless. With the extensive network of support provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve also learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with joyous moments and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a path of personal development, resilience, and meaningful connections. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, know that it’s natural to feel anxious. Take those chances, embrace the obstacles, and remember—you’ve got this.
