**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was coming my way. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been timid and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something I embraced easily. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve grown and the distance I’ve traveled. So, what insights has this year provided me, and how do I perceive my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might also feel anxious about this aspect of embarking on university life. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my journey and support each other. All it took was a touch of casual conversation with others who felt just as uneasy as I did. What’s the lesson here? Take that bold step right at the beginning. If you’re not quite ready or at ease initially, that’s fine—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Above all, be your authentic self. With such a varied community across the course and the university, you’re sure to connect with those who align with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was distinct, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s simple to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others study and fearing you might be falling short.

What assisted me during this time was recognizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. This has undoubtedly become the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Incredible Staff and Support Systems
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The professors and tutors genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the trials we encounter. They keep an open line of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This experience enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and engaging in such opportunities can profoundly influence your journey. My key message? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Insights from My Initial Year
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With an extensive array of support options—ranging from staff to fellow students—help is always within reach. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside joyful moments and enjoyment.

Reflecting on this journey, I take pride in how far I’ve advanced. Starting university was a plunge into uncertainty, but it has turned into a path of growth, determination, and unforgettable memories.
