**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I feel compelled to consider the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Taking the Leap: Building Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered early on was establishing friendships. The start of university can be overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably one of your biggest concerns. On the initial day in student housing, just before the term began, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can confidently say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. These relationships have become my second family, both within my course and throughout the university. It all began with casual conversations and connecting with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what’s the takeaway? Take a bold step early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared or find yourself outside your comfort zone, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Challenge
Adapting to the academic rigors and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another significant obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What enabled me to navigate this was the understanding that we are all in similar situations. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. The vital lesson here is to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year. Whether it involves reaching out to fellow students or requesting assistance from faculty, don’t hesitate to pose questions.
### Support from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, the support from the Materials Science department has been outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They ensure open lines of communication throughout the academic year and are always willing to hear our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had initiated that connection sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and building those relationships can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest insight? Make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive range of support provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I have also learned how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
Starting university is a jump into the unknown, but it also presents a chance for growth, connection, and exploration. If you’re about to embark on your own journey, welcome the challenges, leverage the support available to you, and remember to savor the experience.
