### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and self-doubt as I set out on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was not something my introverted nature was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can say it’s been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early on was building friendships. For many new students, this is a significant concern about starting university, and I was no exception. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to share that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have transformed into my second family here at Imperial, beginning with simple conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same level of anxiety as I was.

So, what has this taught me? Making that initial leap of faith at the year’s outset is essential. If you don’t feel ready or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! There’s a wealth of icebreaker activities and opportunities for socializing. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is the most effective strategy. In such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the higher workload and increased complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.

What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, there are likely others feeling the same way. The key lies in seeking assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most valuable skill you can cultivate in your first year.

#### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department have been extraordinary. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and recognize the difficulties we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year and are always ready to offer support.

While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which has proven immensely helpful. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway here is to utilize the available resources and support—you can never have too much help!

#### Insights Gained

In hindsight, this year has demonstrated to me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was, for the most part, unfounded. There are abundant support systems, from faculty to peers, to assist you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I have figured out how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I look ahead, I feel more assured and ready to tackle whatever lies ahead. If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, remember: take the plunge, seek assistance, and most importantly, be true to yourself.
