### Reflecting on My First Year: Insights Gained in Materials Science and Engineering
*Contributed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person naturally reserved and timid, jumping into this new phase was quite daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been rich with personal development, obstacles, and abundant happiness. So, what have I uncovered, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting aspects I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as well. On my inaugural day at student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These companions have become like a second family to me, both within my academic program and throughout the university. How did I achieve this? It all began with incremental efforts—starting conversations with peers who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial leap of faith is vital. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to make connections. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adjusting to the heightened demands of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more formidable. It wasn’t always a straightforward task to keep my confidence, especially when I noticed peers studying and felt as though I was lagging behind.
What aided me through this was understanding that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The secret is to reach out for assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. This proved to be one of the most significant lessons I gleaned during my first year: don’t shy away from seeking help.
#### Assistance from the Materials Department
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly aspire for their students to thrive and are highly attuned to the issues we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered communication with us, addressing our worries and providing advice.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the available support resources until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. One of the most impactful choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge relationships with staff, which was remarkably valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and I highly encourage seizing these chances. My primary lesson? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
#### Takeaways from My First Year
Reflecting on this past year, it has imparted a wealth of knowledge. The anxious sentiments I experienced before embarking on university—and even during the academic year—were frequently misplaced. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone.
Most crucially, I figured out how to juggle the pressure of exams and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and excitement. This year has been a journey of self-discovery, and I eagerly await what the future brings.
