**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was beset with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase felt quite overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I recognize a phase of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current standing?

### Embracing Change: Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating aspects I encountered was forging friendships. Starting university can be daunting, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All that was needed was a little casual conversation with others who were experiencing the same anxiety.

What have I gleaned? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease right from the start, don’t stress—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others abound. Most importantly, just remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Confronting Academic Hurdles
Another challenge I encountered was acclimating to the rigorous workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It wasn’t always easy to maintain confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling as though I was falling short.

What assisted me in overcoming this was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If a concept eludes your understanding, chances are, many others are grappling with it as well. The crucial element is seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Developing the ability to request support may very well be the most vital skill to cultivate during your initial year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Discussing support, the personnel within the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely wish for students to excel and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our queries and providing direction.

Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support options until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the outset, I took an initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which afforded me the opportunity to establish connections with faculty members—a truly enriching experience. There are numerous methods to interact with staff, and doing so can have a profound impact. My recommendation? Utilize the support available to you. There’s never an excess of assistance.

### What I’ve Gained
In hindsight, this year has revealed that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow scholars, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve mastered the art of balancing exam-related stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Beginning university might seem like a plunge into the unknown, but it also presents a chance for development, connections, and insights. If you’re on the verge of starting your own journey, keep in mind: take the plunge, reach out for help, and embrace your true self. You’re capable of thriving!
