### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was inundated with anxiety, fear, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unknown felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year that was life-changing—filled with personal development, hurdles, and abundant enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this is among the most daunting parts of entering university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, I spent hours retreating to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can say with assurance that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have become akin to a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university.

What was pivotal in my journey? Taking that first brave step. Even if you feel unprepared to engage with others, rest assured, there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to meet people. The key is to embrace your true self—Imperial boasts a diverse community, and you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition between the first and second terms posed even greater difficulties. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or to doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly having everything under control.

What sustained me through those uncertain times was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find a concept challenging, likely, many others do as well. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, reaching out for help can profoundly impact your experience.

#### The Value of Supportive Personnel

On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, responding to our concerns and offering guidance.

I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until late in the year and regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the responsibilities of a year well-being representative was one of the most rewarding choices I made. It allowed me to foster connections with faculty, which proved invaluable. Engaging with your lecturers and tutors, whether through formal roles or casual chats, is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Utilize the assistance and resources accessible—you can never have too much support.

#### Main Insights

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt—both before and during university—was often misplaced. With a wealth of support from staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. This year has enlightened me on managing the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and connection.

Beginning university may seem like a plunge into uncertainty, but it also represents a chance for growth, exploration, and forging lasting friendships. If you’re about to embark on your own adventure, remember: take that leap, stay true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help.
