**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who was previously shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I appreciate how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.

### Taking the Leap: Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you’re probably anxious about this too. On my first day at student accommodation, a few days prior to the term officially starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment arrived when I took a risk and struck up casual conversations with fellow students who were feeling the same way I was. Over time, these interactions blossomed into meaningful relationships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all because of that first courageous step.

So, what have I taken away from this? Firstly, it’s always beneficial to push yourself out of your comfort zone early on. If you don’t feel ready right away, that’s okay—there will be a variety of icebreaker events and occasions to meet others. Secondly, just be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re likely to find others who align with your interests and values.

### Overcoming Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the studies. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more drastic. It’s common to feel lost and doubt your abilities, especially when you observe others appearing to thrive effortlessly.

What helped me most was acknowledging that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, others might be as well. The crucial lesson is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This is perhaps the most important insight I gained during my first year: always feel free to ask for help.

### Supportive Staff and Pastoral Care
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and were always willing to address our issues.

Even though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the first bold steps I took, and it turned out to be incredibly rewarding. It gave me the opportunity to cultivate relationships with staff members, which has proven to be invaluable.

There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and I strongly encourage everyone to make the most of these chances. Whether through formal roles, dedicated office hours, or easygoing conversations, establishing these connections can significantly enhance your experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to use the available resources and support systems—you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained
As I look back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was frequently misplaced. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve mastered balancing the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun. Most importantly, I’ve learned to embrace the challenges and opportunities that university life offers.

To anyone gearing up to start their own adventure, remember that feeling anxious is perfectly normal. Take the plunge, seek help, and remain true to yourself—you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.
