**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted, stepping into the unknown seemed daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, hurdles, and lots of enjoyment, I recognize just how life-changing this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I faced was forming friendships. If you are a future student, this might be one of your major concerns too. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I’m thrilled to report I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.

What made a difference? Taking that initial step and initiating small chats with individuals who were similarly situated. My suggestion? Don’t hesitate to move out of your comfort zone early on. If you’re not ready immediately, that’s fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adjusting to the demands and complexity of the coursework was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university studies was palpable, and the change from the first term to the second appeared even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competencies, particularly when observing others studying and assuming they’re managing better than you.

What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, many others likely are as well. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly care about students’ success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and addressed our worries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had done it earlier. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was a significant leap of faith for me, but it turned out to be one of the best choices I made. It provided me with the opportunity to forge connections with staff members, which has been immeasurable. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting familiar with your lecturers and tutors is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the resources and help offered—you can never have excessive support.

### Insights Gained

This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt—both before beginning university and during my stay here—was frequently unfounded. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I’ve understood that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to reconcile the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Looking back, I recognize how far I’ve progressed since that anxious fresher sequestered in their room. University has been a path of growth, and I’m eager to see where the next chapter leads me.
