**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious excitement as I geared up to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been somewhat introverted, venturing into this new phase felt like entering uncharted territory. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize an academic experience that has been life-changing—characterized by personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the thought of forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I ended up spending the entire day nestled in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment arrived when I gathered the courage to engage in small talk with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. Gradually, these casual interactions evolved into substantial friendships, and I now view my friends at Imperial as an extended family. What lesson did this impart? It’s worthwhile to take that initial jump of faith. If you’re not quite ready at the outset, there’s no need to worry—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others will be available. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was quite stark, and the shift from the first term to the second brought an even greater intensity. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities in such a rigorous setting.

What helped me navigate these periods of uncertainty was the awareness that I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. Everybody around me was facing similar challenges, and if I found something confusing, chances were that others were grappling with it too. The key lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or academic staff, reaching out can truly make a difference.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of staff, the backing I received from the Materials department was remarkable. The teachers and tutors sincerely wish for students to thrive and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open and are always ready to address any issues that arise.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it sooner. At the start, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to collaborate closely with staff members. This experience was invaluable, and I encourage others to seize similar opportunities. Cultivating relationships with staff and utilizing the resources they provide can greatly enrich your time at university.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on the past year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both before and during university—were unfounded. Thanks to the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and connection.

This year has been a path of growth, and I am thankful for the obstacles and achievements that have influenced my journey. If you are about to embark on your own university experience, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal. Take those bold steps, embrace the support around you, and don’t forget to enjoy the journey.
