**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity regarding the journey ahead. I was about to commence my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Daring to leap into uncertainty was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and abundant happiness, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and where I stand today.
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might have similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, a couple of days before the term officially started, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet anyone.
Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve acquired some of the best friends I’ve ever had. My course colleagues and peers have transformed into a second family for me. All it took was a bit of courage to engage in small talk with those in identical circumstances.
What did I discover? Firstly, it’s advantageous to take that initial plunge, even if it feels uneasy. If you’re not prepared right away, that’s alright—plenty of icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others will arise. Secondly, just be yourself. With such a diverse crowd at university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Workload
Another major obstacle was acclimatizing to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when you notice others studying fervently and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
The insight that helped me navigate this was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find a concept difficult, it’s likely that others are too. The essential part is to reach out for assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek aid is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support personnel genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They sustain open lines of communication throughout the year and are perpetually ready to assist.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support system until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the year’s beginning, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. The support structures established, both from faculty and fellow students, are meant to assist you in overcoming challenges.
This year has illuminated that I am never truly isolated, even during demanding periods like exams and deadlines. Most importantly, I’ve mastered the art of balancing hard work and enjoyment, allowing me to fully embrace my university experience.
To anyone gearing up to begin their own journey, keep this in mind: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
