**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new chapter felt like a formidable challenge. Looking back now, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—filled with personal growth, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself at this point?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the greatest obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. This is a common worry for newcomers, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be a concern for you too. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve found some of the best friends I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like family. All it required was a bit of casual conversation with others who were equally hesitant.

So, what have I learned? The essential lesson is to take that initial leap of faith. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re doing enough.

What aided me during these times was the understanding that we’re all facing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others likely are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the subject of seeking help, I cannot stress how incredible the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about students’ success and show great empathy towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and provided unwavering support.

I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are myriad ways to connect with faculty, and engaging with them can profoundly impact your university life. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There is a wealth of support available, be it from staff or fellow students, to help you navigate through the obstacles. I’ve also come to understand that I am never truly alone, and it’s possible to balance academic demands like exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

This year has been a path of development, and I look forward to what the future brings as I advance my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
