**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in a whirlwind of anxiety, doubt, and hesitation as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, taking the plunge into such a major life change felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a phase characterized by personal development, obstacles, and countless happy moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of entering university was the idea of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my initial day moving into student housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can boldly state that I’ve cultivated some of the most significant friendships of my life.
I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief chats with others who were equally as anxious as I was. The main lesson? Take that leap of faith early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a wealth of icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find individuals who connect with you.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the content. The shift from A-levels to university was tough, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and apparently thriving.
What guided me through this was the understanding that we’re all navigating the same journey. If you’re finding something tough to grasp, others likely are too. My best piece of advice is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most essential skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### Fostering Relationships with Staff
Speaking of instructors, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The faculty and support personnel genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are consistently willing to assist.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the best choices I made. It afforded me the opportunity to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal engagements, getting acquainted with your professors and tutors is one of the wisest decisions you can make. My primary takeaway here? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the academic year—was frequently baseless. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and relaxation.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing experience. It’s illuminated the importance of taking risks, reaching out for help, and approaching the journey with an open heart. If you’re on the verge of beginning your university path, keep in mind: the challenges you encounter will foster your growth, and the relationships you build will shape your experience in unforeseen ways.
