**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been quiet and reserved, diving headfirst into new experiences was quite outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this ranks among the most significant worries regarding the start of university. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the commencement of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture outside and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I can firmly attest that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, particularly within my academic program, I’ve discovered a second family. It merely required stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what revelation did I arrive at? I discovered that taking a chance at the onset of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease from the beginning, that’s perfectly acceptable—there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals at Imperial, you are sure to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adjusting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The leap from A-level studies to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a rigorous academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you are lagging behind.
What supported me through this was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The most vital lesson I gleaned during my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out can significantly impact your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and showed understanding toward our challenges.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway is to leverage the support systems within your reach—you can never have too much assistance!
### Important Insights from My First Year
In retrospect, this year has illustrated that the anxious sentiments I experienced—both before commencing university and during my first term—were often unfounded. With a broad array of support options offered by faculty and fellow students, there is always help available when needed. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned to juggle having fun while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I get ready to enter my second year, I feel notably more assured and eager about what lies ahead. For anyone about to embark on their own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap of faith, seek help when needed, and remember to relish the journey.
