**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, leaping into this new phase felt like plunging into deep waters. Reflecting on an academic year replete with development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and how much I’ve achieved.
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
A particularly daunting facet of beginning university was the prospect of meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably something that crosses your mind as well. I confess, on my first day of moving into the dorms—just days before the semester officially commenced—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can assert that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered have transformed into a second family, all originating from casual chats and shared moments. What I’ve come to understand is that taking that first step is always beneficial. If you’re not quite ready at the outset, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the demands and complexities of university courses was yet another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more substantial. It’s common to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities upon observing others studying and appearing to thrive.
What aided me through this period was the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, others likely are as well. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or faculty members. This may be one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of our hurdles. They maintain open channels for communication and are always eager to address our worries.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me forge connections with faculty. This was an invaluable opportunity, and I urge others to pursue similar avenues to engage with the staff. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support systems offered to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxieties I faced—both before and during university—were often baseless. With a wealth of support provided by staff and fellow students, I discovered that I was never truly isolated. I’ve also learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and leisure.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve evolved since that anxious freshman who secluded themselves on the first day. University has been a voyage of self-exploration, resilience, and connection, and I’m eager to discover what lies ahead.
