**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been shy and introverted, stepping into the unknown was not something I was familiar with. Reflecting on the past academic year, I now see it as a period rich with growth, challenges, and abundant happiness. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can certainly be intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably one of your concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—friends who resemble a second family.

What facilitated my journey here? Taking gradual steps, such as initiating conversations with others who were also navigating similar emotions. I discovered that taking a chance at the outset of the year is truly beneficial. If you’re not quite ready or comfortable immediately, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker activities and events are available to aid in connecting with others. Most significantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Academic Shift
An additional major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the complexities of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and the shift from the first semester to the second semester felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and appearing to have everything sorted out.

What helped me during those trying times was the reminder that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are experiencing the same difficulties. The most constructive action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty and Support Services
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff are genuinely invested in the success of students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They uphold open lines of communication with students throughout the academic year, addressing concerns and providing support.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care services until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, allowing me to forge connections with staff members. This experience proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and support you have at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and throughout university was often misplaced. With the plethora of support available—from faculty to fellow students—there’s always someone to reach out to. I’ve recognized that I’m never truly by myself and that it’s feasible to relish university life even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.

This year has been one of substantial personal development, and I’m eager to discover what lies ahead. To anyone poised to embark on their university journey: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You can do this!
