**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, diving into the unknown was far from where I felt comfortable. Reflecting on the past year, I see a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and innumerable joyful moments. So, what insights has this year provided me, and where am I today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re considering becoming a student, this could also be your primary concern. On my initial day in student housing, just before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. These individuals have turned into my second family, both in my course and throughout the university.

What aided me? Taking that initial step of faith. Initiating conversations with others who were experiencing similar situations—whether through casual chat or shared experiences—was crucial. And if you’re not ready to leap right away, don’t fret. There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to come across those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence wasn’t always easy, especially when surrounded by peers who appeared to have everything under control.

What helped me during those moments of doubt was the awareness that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I lacked understanding in a topic, it was likely that others were also struggling. The essential lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for support is one of the most critical skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Staff
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our anxieties and offering guidance.

While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. Taking on the role of year well-being representative was one of the early steps I took, and it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It facilitated the development of ties with staff members, which has been immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of all the assistance and resources available—there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both before entering university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There is a plethora of support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to face difficulties alone. This year has illustrated to me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been one of development, resilience, and connection. If you are about to embark on your own university journey, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal—but also remember that you are never truly alone.
