**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments, I can safely declare it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Friend-Making Challenge

One of the most daunting challenges of moving to university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I’ve cultivated some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who have become like family.

What changed? Taking that crucial first step. Initiating conversations, even brief ones, with others in the same situation was all it took. If you’re feeling uneasy or uncertain, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect will arise. The key lesson I learned is to remain authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you will undoubtedly encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic rigors of university was yet another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and achieving.

What aided me in overcoming those moments of uncertainty was the acknowledgment that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult, it’s likely that others are too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to request help is one of the most vital skills you can grasp during your initial year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

When discussing support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely wish for their students to thrive and are sensitive to the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication channels open and promptly addressed our issues.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of my best choices was becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—there’s always room for assistance.

### Key Learnings

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both before and during university—were baseless. Given the extensive support available from faculty and peers, there is always a path to navigate challenges. This year has shown me that I am never truly solitary and that it’s feasible to juggle exam-related stress and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.

As I progress onward, I feel thankful for the development I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve built. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure: embrace the apprehension, take the plunge, and trust that you’ll find your footing.
