**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fears, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in such a novel and demanding environment was outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences, I realize how transformative this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost challenges I encountered in the beginning was the task of making friends—a formidable concern for many newcomers. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely you’re feeling the same way. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.

These bonds didn’t come about instantly; they originated from small gestures—such as engaging in light conversation with individuals who shared my nervousness. As time passed, these interactions blossomed into a second family here at Imperial. My key takeaway? Take that initial step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be your authentic self. With such a diverse student community throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find people who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the leap from the first term to the second term was even more significant. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re on track.

What assisted me in overcoming this was realizing that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others do as well. The essential thing is to seek help—be it from your peers or teaching staff. Learning to ask for assistance is arguably the most valuable skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department staff are. They sincerely care about student success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were consistently ready to address our issues.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support options until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. Taking on the role of year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the year’s start, and it turned out to be an excellent decision. It afforded me the chance to forge relationships with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting to know the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. My recommendation? Make the most of the available support and resources—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still cherishing joyful moments, and I’ve gained greater confidence in myself along the way.

As I progress, I’m eager to continue this journey of personal growth and exploration. To anyone on the verge of starting their own university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and keep in mind that support is always close by.
