**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the journey ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time filled with significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Surmounting the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was establishing friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably something you’re also anxious about. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment came when I made the choice to push myself to engage in small talk with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Over time, these brief exchanges grew into significant friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with that initial act of bravery.
So, what’s the lesson here? Take that courageous step at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t ready or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most critically, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic load and challenges was another major obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.
What was beneficial for me was realizing that everyone is navigating this together. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely others are too. The essential action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for support is arguably the most critical skill you can acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department have been extraordinary. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and were always available to address our questions.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support system until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early in the year, I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, getting acquainted with the faculty is among the best things you can do for your well-being. My recommendation? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the extensive support provided by faculty and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I am never truly isolated. More importantly, I’ve learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a transformative experience. It has been a journey of stepping out of my comfort zone, embracing challenges, and forging connections that I will treasure for years to come.
