**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt like an intimidating challenge. Now that I reflect on this past year, I recognize it as a time of transformation—packed with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what have I gained, and what’s my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges for me was making friends. The onset of university can be daunting, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Jump to today, and I can proudly say I’ve established some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. The significant breakthrough? Simply initiating brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I learn? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, don’t be concerned—there will be numerous social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just remain authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and shifting from the first term to the second felt even more drastic. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your abilities, particularly when you observe others appearing to thrive.

What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re having difficulty comprehending a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial point is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Cultivating the ability to seek help is perhaps the most vital skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Support and Community

Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained clear communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.

I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the year drew to a close, and I regret not utilizing it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be priceless. There are myriad ways to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can dramatically enhance your university journey. My key insight? Take full advantage of the assistance provided—you can never receive too much support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. The extensive range of support, from staff to fellow students, made a significant impact. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressure of assessments and deadlines.

This year has been a path of growth, and I’m eager to discover what lies ahead as I progress in my studies. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university journey: take that leap, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do this!
