**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a significant transition felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with development, challenges, and enjoyment, I can truly appreciate the transformative nature of this experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this issue ranks high on the list of concerns when starting university—and I was no different. On my initial day in student accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I have forged some of the most wonderful friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to take a risk and engage in casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings. Over time, these exchanges blossomed into substantial relationships, and I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. My main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to take that leap early. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people will arise. Above all, just be yourself. In such a diverse student community, you’re bound to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when observing others study and appear to excel.
What aided me in overcoming this was realizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re confused about a topic, there are likely others feeling the same way. The crucial step is to ask for assistance—whether it’s from peers or faculty members. Developing the ability to seek help is arguably the most vital skill to hone in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the faculty members in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly want students to flourish and are understanding of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and offering support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had sought it earlier. One proactive step I took at the beginning of the year was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage making the most of these opportunities. My key lesson here is to utilize the support available to you—there’s never such a thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that many of the anxious feelings I harbored—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were unwarranted. With the extensive support options accessible from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to navigate the stresses of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a path of personal growth, resilience, and connection. For anyone about to embark on a similar journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help, and seize the opportunities that come your way.
