**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. About to commence my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, I felt like I was plunging into the deep end. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I realize just how impactful this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Difficulty of Making Friends

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you’re probably concerned about this as well. I vividly recall my initial day in student accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of term. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions and ideals. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain.

What did I glean from this? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, I learned to simply be myself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who align with you.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another major obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when you witness others studying and thriving.

What aided me in this journey was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial thing is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or the faculty. This became one of the key lessons I learned during my first year: don’t hesitate to request help.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely care about our success and understand the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and were always ready to address our issues.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had leveraged it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members that proved invaluable.

There are various ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these avenues. The support they provide can make a significant difference, and you can never receive too much help.

### Significant Insights

In reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during my time at university—was often unfounded. There is ample support available, whether from staff or fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve recognized that I’m never truly alone in this journey, and I’ve learned how to balance stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy.

Beginning university is a plunge into the unknown, but it also presents a chance for remarkable growth. Embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and remember to savor the experience.
