**Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For a person who once considered themselves shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase of life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I can recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the thought of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may relate to those feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I remained in my room throughout the day, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, all beginning with brief exchanges with individuals who were equally anxious. What did I take away from this? Taking that initial plunge is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, there are countless icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, I learned to embrace my authentic self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover others who share your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing peers studying and seeming to have it all together.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, likely, others are as well. The secret lies in seeking assistance. This could very well be the most critical lesson I learned during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or obtaining help from faculty, asking for help is indispensable.

### Support from the Materials Department

On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials Science and Engineering team is. They genuinely care about our success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and showed understanding towards our difficulties.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, a decision I regret not making earlier. At the beginning of the year, I decided to step up and become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these chances. My most important takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the support systems that are accessible. You can never receive too much help!

### Lessons Assimilated

In hindsight, this year has illustrated that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the vast array of support options—from faculty to fellow students—there is always someone to rely on. I’ve learned that I’m never isolated, and I’ve grasped how to enjoy life while managing the inevitable stress that comes with exams and deadlines.

As I progress onward, I feel more assured and equipped for what lies ahead. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure, know that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. Take that leap, stay true to yourself, and remember that help is always nearby.
