**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, entering the unknown seemed daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize that this past academic year has been a remarkable journey—filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Challenge of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate to those feelings. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too scared to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These relationships feel like a second family, beginning with simple chats with others who were feeling similarly. What’s the takeaway? Taking that crucial first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared or comfortable immediately, that’s fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with those who share your passions and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the elevated complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more significant. It’s easy to become daunted or doubt your abilities when watching others study with assurance.

What guided me through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, likely, others are struggling too. The key is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support team genuinely wish for students to thrive and are fully aware of the obstacles we encounter. They show empathy and keep lines of communication open throughout the academic year to tackle our concerns.

While I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and I strongly suggest seizing these chances. My key insight? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support mechanisms available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during my university journey—was frequently baseless. With the array of support options available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I’ve discovered how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and fun.

As I contemplate my first year, I take pride in the strides I’ve made. The challenges I navigated have transformed me into a more self-assured and resilient individual, and I am eager to see what the future has in store.
