**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period filled with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights has this year provided, and where do I currently find myself?

### Taking the Plunge: Building Friendships
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this stands out as a primary concern about beginning university, and I was certainly in that camp. On my first day at the student residence, mere days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My companions here have come to feel like a second family, all initiated by brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I learn? Taking that first step is essential. Even when you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Confronting the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and heightened complexity of university-level material posed another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others study and assume they’ve got everything figured out.

What aided me during this process was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The solution is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the academic staff. Learning to request help is perhaps the most beneficial skill you can foster during your initial year.

### Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.

While I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal gatherings, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the best things you can do for your well-being. My greatest lesson? Maximize the support systems available—you can never have excessive assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve recognized that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage stressors like exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the challenges that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and for the friendships and experiences that rendered this year unforgettable.
