**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the path forward. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who has always leaned towards being introverted, plunging into unfamiliar territory felt daunting. Now, as I contemplate the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous happy memories. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Taking the Leap: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is a common worry among many future students about beginning university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become like a second family.
What changed? It all began with casual conversations. I realized everyone else was feeling just as apprehensive as I was. Taking that first brave step to greet and engage with others was crucial. For anyone commencing their university journey, my suggestion is to welcome those initial moments of awkwardness. Even if you don’t feel adequately prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to build connections with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic load and the intricacies of the course content. The shift from A-levels to university-level education was tough, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others studying and apparently thriving.
What assisted me in navigating this was the awareness that I was not alone. Everyone was facing the same difficulties, and if I struggled with a concept, it was likely others were as well. The key lesson I took from my first year was to seek assistance. Whether it’s your classmates or the teaching staff, reaching out for help can significantly change your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department is. The educators and support personnel genuinely aim for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep communication lines open throughout the year and are always eager to assist.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of the wisest decisions I made was becoming a welfare representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge valuable connections with staff members. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting acquainted with your lecturers and support personnel is one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway? Fully embrace the help available to you—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has illustrated that the anxiety I felt—both before beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the vast amount of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with periods of joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It has highlighted the significance of taking risks, embracing challenges, and leaning on the community surrounding me. For anyone gearing up to commence their university adventure, remember that it’s natural to feel uneasy—but also understand that you’re entering an environment brimming with opportunities for development, connection, and success.
