**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been withdrawn and introverted, plunging into the academic world felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can assert that it has been an eye-opening journey. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered initially was forging friendships. Starting university can feel intimidating, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be one of your main worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can enthusiastically say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These connections didn’t spring up overnight; they began with small interactions—like engaging in light conversation with others who were experiencing the same uncertainty I was. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the institution. The crucial lesson I gleaned? Commit to that leap of faith early. Even if you’re not quite ready or comfortable initially, there are ample ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a rich tapestry of students, you’ll undoubtedly find individuals who align with your passions and principles.

### Overcoming Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic responsibilities and the complexity of the material was yet another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university brought a stark contrast, and the change from the first term to the subsequent one registered even more significantly. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing classmates study and appear to thrive.

What assisted me in navigating this was the acknowledgment that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are as well. The key skill I honed in my first year was the ability to seek assistance. Whether it involved reaching out to classmates or requesting help from faculty, the act of asking for support proved invaluable.

### Backing from the Materials Department
On the subject of faculty, one of the standout features of my year has been the remarkable encouragement from the Materials department. The lecturers and staff genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They foster open dialogue throughout the academic year, addressing our issues and furnishing direction.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the outset, I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connections with staff members. This role was immensely rewarding and deepened my appreciation for the assistance accessible to students. My suggestion? Leverage the aid available to you—whether academically, pastorally, or socially. You can never have an excess of support.

### Major Insights
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support from staff and peers, I was never truly isolated. This year has shown me how to manage the tension from exams and deadlines alongside instances of happiness and enjoyment.

To anyone getting ready for university, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure. Take those courageous steps, seize the opportunities that present themselves, and don’t shy away from asking for help. University is a voyage of personal growth, and you’ll emerge stronger, more self-assured, and with treasured memories for a lifetime.
