**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat shy and introverted, embarking on this new phase of life felt akin to plunging into deep waters. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can assert that it has been truly transformative. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Navigating the Challenge of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the task of making friends. For potential students, this may also be a significant concern. I vividly recall my first day in my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting officially. I spent that entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted by the thought of stepping outside and introducing myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to share that I’ve formed some of my closest friendships—people who feel like a second family.

What shifted? It all began with simple conversations. I came to realize that everyone around me shared the same feelings, grappling with their own nervousness. Taking that first step to say “hi” transformed my experience. If you’re apprehensive about this, don’t worry—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. My most valuable lesson? Be authentic. In such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university proved to be another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university-level coursework was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others who appear to be effortlessly managing everything.

What assisted me was the reminder that everyone was encountering similar difficulties. If I didn’t grasp a concept, there was a good chance that others were struggling as well. The crucial thing was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This may be the most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help.

### Encouraging Staff and Pastoral Support

On the subject of support, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they kept avenues of communication open and were consistently prepared to address our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral care system until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Accepting the position of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it ended up being one of my best decisions. It allowed me to forge connections with staff that proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and I wholeheartedly recommend utilizing these opportunities. The support is readily available—don’t hesitate to take advantage of it.

### A Year of Development

As I contemplate the past year, I’ve recognized that the apprehension I felt before and throughout my university experience was often unfounded. With the abundant support afforded by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has imparted valuable lessons on how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, university is as much about personal development as it is about academics. Taking those initial steps—be it introducing yourself to new people, asking for guidance, or venturing beyond your comfort zone—can lead to remarkable experiences and prospects.

If you’re on the verge of starting your own university adventure, welcome the challenges and have faith in the support systems surrounding you. You can do this!
