**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in a mix of nervous excitement, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been rather introverted, the prospect of plunging into university life was intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I realize how much I have absorbed and the distance I have traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant source of intimidation when starting university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may share these feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent hours secluding myself in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have evolved into my second family, both within my program and across the university.

So, what have I understood? Taking that first leap of faith is essential. Even if you’re not prepared to jump in right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student community, it’s inevitable that you will encounter individuals who share your passions and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was acclimating to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What aided me in this journey was the understanding that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether it’s from friends or professors. Learning to request help is arguably the most vital skill you can develop in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

The faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we face. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had engaged earlier. Initially, I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to foster strong connections with faculty. This was a priceless experience, and I urge others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal positions or casual conversations, forging relationships with staff can be immensely beneficial. My chief lesson? Never hold back from utilizing the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This past year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before embarking on my university journey—and even during it—was oftentimes overstated. With abundant support from both faculty and classmates, I was never isolated. I’ve cultivated the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment, and I’ve become more confident in myself throughout this process.

Looking back, I recognize how much I have progressed, on both academic and personal fronts. For anyone about to embark on their university adventure, my recommendation is straightforward: take that plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You will be astonished by what you can accomplish.
