**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I commenced a journey that was rife with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who has always been introverted, plunging into such a substantial life transition felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year characterized by personal growth, obstacles, and joy, I can assert that this experience has been life-changing. So, what insights have I gathered, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges was the effort to forge new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day at student accommodation, just prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Fast forward to now, and I am pleased to declare that I have cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered at Imperial, both in my program and beyond, have become like family to me.

What changed the game? It all began with small, simple steps—striking up casual chats with fellow students who were just as anxious as I was. My most significant lesson? Take the plunge early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be countless mixers and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, be genuine. With such a diverse population at university, you are sure to find those who vibe with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the sophisticated nature of the course content. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to fall into self-doubt when you observe others studying and worry you’re lagging behind. What helped me was remembering that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you are having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors.

### Help from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, I must highlight how exceptional the Materials department is. The educators and tutors genuinely care about students’ success, recognizing the challenges we encounter. They are approachable, understanding, and foster open dialogues throughout the academic year. Although I didn’t fully tap into the available support systems until the later part of the year, I wish I had engaged with them earlier.

One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, establishing relationships with staff is immensely beneficial. My suggestion? Make the most of the support networks available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has illuminated for me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the vast support offered by both colleagues and faculty, I was never genuinely alone. I have learned to harmonize stressors such as exams and deadlines with instances of joy and enjoyment, contributing to significant personal growth.

In retrospect, I am thankful for the challenges, the relationships built, and the opportunities for advancement. If you are on the verge of starting your own university experience, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal. Embrace the support surrounding you, take those brave steps, and always keep in mind—you’ve got this.
