**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I entered a period of nervousness, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into uncharted territory felt overwhelming. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with development, obstacles, and innumerable joyful instances. So, what lessons did this pivotal year impart, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. For many incoming students, this is often one of the primary sources of anxiety when beginning university. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can affirmatively say that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

These bonds didn’t materialize instantaneously, but rather emerged from small beginnings—casual chats with individuals who felt just as anxious as I did. As time elapsed, these interactions blossomed into what truly resembles a second family in my life at Imperial. My most significant lesson? Seize that opportunity for connection early. Even if you lack confidence, numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others abound. Most importantly, simply be yourself. Given the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who share your passions and principles.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the demands of university coursework was yet another considerable challenge. The transition from A-level studies to university was distinctly noticeable, with an even sharper learning curve from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when amidst high-achieving peers. However, a key realization that aided me tremendously was that everyone experiences similar difficulties. If you’re grappling with understanding a concept, it’s likely others are as well.

The solution to overcoming this is straightforward: seek assistance. This has been perhaps the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year. Whether it involves reaching out to fellow students or seeking advice from faculty, don’t shy away from asking questions. Cooperation and support are invaluable assets for navigating the complexities of university life.

### Cultivating Relationships with Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and support staff genuinely desire for students to excel and are always eager to assist. They comprehend the challenges students encounter and keep open lines of communication throughout the academic year.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. In the beginning, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be an immensely beneficial experience. There are countless avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have excessive help.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during the university was often unfounded. With the extensive support accessible from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely isolated. This past year has instructed me on how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and personal development.

Ultimately, university encompasses more than merely academic pursuits. It’s a journey of self-exploration, forming connections, and learning to flourish in new settings. If you’re on the brink of starting your own adventure, remember to take those daring steps, embrace the challenges, and seize the opportunities that come your way.
