**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new experience felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxieties of Friendship
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, you may resonate with the same anxiety. On my first day in university accommodation, a few days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have become my second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals who were equally anxious.
What did I discover? Taking that vital initial step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter others who share your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinctly marked, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you are keeping pace.
What helped me through this was realizing that everyone faces similar struggles. If you find something challenging to comprehend, it’s likely that others do as well. The critical point is to seek help—whether it’s from peers or faculty. Learning to reach out for support might be the most vital skill to cultivate during your freshman year.
### Assistance from Staff and Pastoral Care
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish to see students thrive and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open communication, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support services until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, yet it became one of the best choices I’ve made. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members that proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly recommend utilizing these opportunities. My main takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the available resources and assistance—you can never have too much support.
### Takeaways
Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often undeserved. With the extensive support systems available from faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I figured out how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and leisure.
As I progress, I’m thankful for the challenges and development I’ve experienced. To anyone about to commence their university adventure: embrace the nervousness, take that leap, and remember—you can handle it.
