**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I set out on my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an inherently shy and introverted person, the idea of venturing into unfamiliar territory was quite intimidating. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of significant change—characterized by development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the task of making new friends. If you are a future student, this might rank high on your list of worries too. On my moving-in day, I spent the entire time confined to my room, too anxious to go out and say hello. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. These connections have turned into my second family during my time at Imperial.

The pivotal moment came when I decided to take that first step—initiating small chats with others who were equally new to this adventure. What I discovered is that pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone from the start is essential. If you don’t feel ready at once, that’s perfectly fine—there are plenty of introductory events and avenues for meeting others. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic pressures and complexity of the material was yet another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition between the first and second terms proved to be even tougher. It’s common to experience self-doubt as you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.

What aided me was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The best recommendation I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most vital abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### Guidance from Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been phenomenal. They truly aim for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our issues and offering support.

Though I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had engaged earlier. Serving as a year well-being representative was one of my best choices. It enabled me to form connections with faculty members that proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the assistance and resources offered—you can never have too much backing.

### Insights Gained
This year has enlightened me to realize that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, ranging from staff to fellow students, to assist you through challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m not genuinely alone, and I’ve mastered the art of balancing the stress from exams and deadlines while embracing joyful moments and fun.

Looking back, I take pride in my progress. University is a journey of personal development, and although it can occasionally seem overwhelming, it’s also a chance to uncover your capabilities, forge lasting friendships, and create extraordinary memories.
