**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was set to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, diving into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year that was filled not only with obstacles but also with significant personal development, unforgettable memories, and a lot of enjoyment. So what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably something that’s concerning you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and meet people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here at Imperial.
The pivotal moment came when I encouraged myself to engage in casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings as me. Gradually, I forged connections and discovered my second family within the university and my program. The important takeaway here? Take that initial step of faith. Even if you’re feeling unsure or hesitant, there will be many ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. And above all, be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who connect with you.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adjusting to the academic pressures of university was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level coursework was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others studying and thriving.
What guided me through this was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are in the same situation. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help may be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been exceptionally supportive. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing our issues and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had earlier. One proactive step I took was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway? Make use of the support systems accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt—both before beginning university and throughout my journey—was often misplaced. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has shown me how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and fulfillment.
Looking forward, I am thankful for the challenges I’ve encountered and the personal growth they’ve fostered. To anyone about to embark on their university journey: embrace the jitters, take those leaps, and remember that support is always at hand.
