**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the road ahead. I was set to commence my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I recognize how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can be overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These relationships have come to feel like a second family to me here at Imperial. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same situation.
So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a chance at the start of the year is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is essential. With such a rich tapestry of diverse individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more strenuous. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities while observing others study and wondering if you’re keeping pace.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is dealing with similar situations. If something doesn’t click for you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. Learning how to request help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how supportive the Materials department has been. The staff genuinely desires for students to thrive and is well aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintain open communication with us to resolve any concerns we may have.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the year’s outset, I took the initiative of becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience.
My main takeaway? Utilize the available support. Whether it’s academic assistance or pastoral care, you can never receive too much help.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has enlightened me to the fact that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive support options accessible—from staff to fellow students—help is always at your fingertips. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to relish university life even amidst the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
As I advance, I am thankful for the personal growth, challenges, and friendships that have defined my first year. To anyone poised to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, be genuine, and don’t hesitate to ask for support. You can do this!
