**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I prepared to start my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, plunging into such a new and demanding environment felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I perceive a time of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous joyous moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the anticipation of forging new friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might relate to those feelings. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the term began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life.

The breakthrough occurred when I opted to take a bold step and strike up conversations with others who were equally anxious. Over time, these interactions evolved into genuine friendships, and I now regard my peers at Imperial as a second family.

What did this teach me? Firstly, it’s essential to muster that initial courage, even when it feels difficult. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and events tailored to help you connect. Secondly, always remain authentic. With such a varied student body, you are sure to meet people who reflect your interests and values.

### Navigating Academic Obstacles

Adjusting to the academic rigors of university was yet another notable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level studies was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing my peers seemingly thriving.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that I wasn’t the only one experiencing this. Everyone was grappling with similar challenges, and if I was struggling, it’s likely others were too. The key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or professors, acquiring help is one of the most crucial skills you can build in your first year.

### Establishing Rapport with Supportive Staff

Speaking of faculty, one of the remarkable highlights of my time in the Materials department has been the exceptional support from the staff. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and show understanding towards the difficulties we encounter. They keep communication channels open and are always ready to address our inquiries.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I made the bold decision to become a well-being representative for my year, a position that enabled me to foster connections with faculty members. This experience turned out to be invaluable, as it acquainted me with the resources and support systems at our disposal. My recommendation? Embrace the assistance being offered—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Upon reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both before starting university and throughout the year—were unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly alone.

This year has equipped me with the ability to balance the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and relaxation. Most importantly, it has highlighted the significance of stepping outside my comfort zone, whether it involves making new acquaintances, asking for help, or embracing new opportunities.

As I look forward to the upcoming academic year, I feel more confident and ready to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead.
