**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I prepared to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, plunging into such a major change felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year that was life-changing—filled with personal development, hurdles, and numerous moments of happiness. So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was meeting new people. Beginning university can feel intimidating, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I spent hours retreating to my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment arrived when I made the decision to challenge myself to engage in casual conversations with others who were equally new to this experience. Gradually, these exchanges blossomed into significant relationships, and I discovered a second family here at Imperial. My most significant takeaway? Embrace that leap early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect. And above all, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

### Confronting the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another challenge. The shift from A-levels to university coursework was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to question your own capabilities when you see others seemingly thriving. However, one realization that aided me was understanding that everyone shares similar struggles.

If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others are facing it too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most valuable skill to acquire during your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials Science and Engineering department have been remarkable. They sincerely care about our success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, and I wish I had utilized it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage you to seize these opportunities. The support they offer can significantly impact your experience.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have learned that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was often unfounded. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve discovered how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while savoring enjoyable moments, and I’ve become more self-assured in the process.

To anyone getting ready to embark on their university journey, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal. But remember, you are entering an environment rich with growth opportunities, connections, and support. Take the plunge—you will not regret it.
