**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, plunging into such a new and challenging atmosphere felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what have I learned this year, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may find yourself in a similar situation. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. What brought me to this point? It began with small conversations and connecting with others who were equally apprehensive.

The most significant lesson I gleaned is to take an early leap of faith. If you’re not prepared right off the bat, that’s alright—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people as the year progresses. Above all, be yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to discover people who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Hurdles

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and thriving.

What supported me through these bouts of self-doubt was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are feeling the same. The crucial takeaway is to seek assistance. This may be one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year—don’t shy away from seeking help from your peers or faculty members.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for our success and grasp the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and showed understanding toward our challenges.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold choices I made at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable.

There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I strongly advocate for capitalizing on these opportunities. Whether through formal roles, office hours, or informal chats, establishing these connections can significantly impact your experience. My primary conclusion? Don’t hesitate to tap into the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and at various points during the year—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive range of support available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never truly isolated.

I’ve learned how to reconcile stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment. More crucially, I’ve evolved into a more confident and resilient version of myself.

To anyone gearing up for their first year at university, my message is straightforward: take those leaps of faith, embrace the support surrounding you, and remember that you are not alone on this journey.
