**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I set out to commence my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself into university life felt overwhelming. Reflecting on this past year, I see it as not just demanding but also life-changing, brimming with personal development, new adventures, and countless enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the largest obstacles I encountered at the beginning was making new friends. For many incoming students, this aspect of transitioning to university can be particularly daunting, and I was certainly among them. On my first day at the student residence, I spent hours cooped up in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the most cherished friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment came when I opted to strike up casual conversations with others who were equally unsure. Gradually, these exchanges developed into significant friendships, and I genuinely feel as though I’ve discovered a second family within Imperial. My suggestion? Take that leap early on. If you aren’t quite ready, don’t stress—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect will come your way. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at university, you are sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Shift in Academic Rigor
Adapting to the academic challenges presented by university was yet another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university assignments was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more difficult. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by peers achieving extraordinary results.
What benefited me the most was understanding that I wasn’t the only one experiencing these feelings. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, chances are others are as well. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—be it from fellow students or faculty members. Learning how to ask for help is among the most crucial competencies you can acquire in your initial year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They are genuinely invested in ensuring student success and are sympathetic to the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and offering advice.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, I wish I had started using it earlier. Accepting the role of a well-being representative for my year was a significant step for me, yet it ended up being one of the most fulfilling choices I made. It enabled me to forge strong relationships with faculty, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, establishing rapport with your lecturers and tutors can profoundly impact your experience. My primary takeaway? Make full use of the available support systems—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to entering university and throughout the year—was frequently baseless. With the extensive support offered by both faculty and fellow students, I came to understand I was never genuinely alone. This year has equipped me with the skills to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while cherishing joyful and fulfilling moments.
As I progress in my university experience, I appreciate the lessons, friendships, and encounters that have influenced my journey thus far. For anyone preparing to embark on a similar journey: face the challenges head-on, seek out support, and don’t forget to savor the experience.
