**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer at Imperial College London. For someone who had always maintained a shy and reserved demeanor, embarking on this new journey felt intensely daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I perceive a path rich in personal development, obstacles overcome, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this represents a significant worry about beginning university. I recall spending my very first day in my accommodation, sheltering in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment came when I compelled myself to initiate small conversations with others in similar situations. Gradually, these exchanges developed into genuine relationships, and I now regard my friends at Imperial as a second family.
What has this taught me? First, take that courageous step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others will present themselves. Secondly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to locate individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was perceptible, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel inundated or to question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others appearing to succeed effortlessly.
What aided me in this journey was the understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that your peers are as well. The essential step is to ask for assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your inaugural year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
In relation to support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication and addressed our worries.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to collaborate closely with staff, a truly invaluable experience. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. With the ample support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.
This year has instructed me on balancing the pressures of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment. It has highlighted the importance of taking risks, seeking assistance, and welcoming new experiences.
As I anticipate the upcoming academic year, I feel increasingly confident and eager about the future. To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek support. You can do this!
