**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I readied myself to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been quite introverted, plunging into such a major life transition felt like a lot to handle. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments, I can consider the insights I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student coming across this, chances are this is something weighing on your mind as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions and provide support through both the peaks and valleys. All it took was pushing myself out of my comfort zone and initiating small talks with others who were equally apprehensive.

So, what insights did I gain? Firstly, it’s essential to take that plunge at the start of the year, even when it feels intimidating. If you’re not quite ready to jump in, don’t fret—there are numerous opportunities for icebreakers and to connect with others. Secondly, the most vital aspect is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse crowd at Imperial, you’re sure to find people you resonate with.

### Navigating the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the demands and challenges of university-level material was yet another significant obstacle. The transition from A-levels to higher education was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel lost or question your competencies when observing others studying and pondering if you’re measuring up.

What assisted me in this process was the understanding that everyone is in a similar situation. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help could be the most beneficial skill you acquire in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

A particularly noteworthy highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in our success and show empathy toward the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept communication open with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for my year was a bold move I made early on, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff, which became invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual conversations, getting to know the faculty is one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit.

My main takeaway? Utilize the support structures available to you. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral support, or simple advice, you can never overstate the value of having support.

### Insights Gained from My First Year

In retrospect, this year has shown me that much of the anxiety I experienced—both leading up to university and throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support offered by staff and fellow students, assistance is always accessible when needed. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve uncovered ways to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the challenges that propelled my growth and the friendships that rendered this year memorable. To anyone about to commence their own university adventure: take that leap, welcome the support surrounding you, and have faith that you’ll find your niche.
