**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I began an adventure that was equally thrilling and intimidating: commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, the notion of stepping into this new phase was quite daunting. Reflecting back, I now recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of my greatest apprehensions when entering university was the prospect of forming friendships. This is a typical concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my inaugural day at my student residence, I found myself spending hours confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most profound friendships of my life.

The shift occurred when I realized that everyone else shared similar sentiments, feeling just as anxious and eager to forge connections. Engaging in a bit of casual conversation with my fellow students led to relationships that now resemble a second family. My suggestion? Take that initial leap. Even if you feel uncertain, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, be authentic. In such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Expectations
Navigating the academic challenges of university represented another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was striking, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others thriving seemingly effortlessly.

What aided me was the realization that I was not navigating this journey alone. If I was struggling to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar difficulties. The essential lesson here is to seek assistance. Whether from peers or faculty, requesting support is vital. Don’t hesitate to connect—everyone is there to aid your success.

### The Remarkable Faculty
One of the most impressive elements of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about students’ welfare and are always receptive to feedback. Their compassion and readiness to assist made a significant impact on my first year.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had explored it sooner. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it allowed me to forge strong ties with staff members. Building relationships with faculty is invaluable, and there are various methods to do so. My most important insight? Fully utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained
Upon reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to understand that many of the worries I held were baseless. Anxiety, whether felt before commencing university or throughout the year, can often be mitigated by the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students. This year has imparted the lesson that I’m never genuinely alone and that it is feasible to manage academic pressures while also enjoying the experience.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the personal growth, friendships, and lessons that this year has provided. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, keep in mind: take the leap, ask for assistance, and seize the opportunities that come your way.
