**Thoughts on My Initial Year of Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I set off on a journey that brought a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student felt like plunging into the deep end—an experience my previously timid and withdrawn self was not prepared for. Now, as I look back on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and happiness, it’s clear how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve advanced.

### Confronting the Initial Major Challenge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of entering university was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your top concerns as well. On my first day in accommodations, right before the term started, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve built some of the most profound friendships I’ve ever had.

The trick for me was taking gradual steps—beginning with basic small talk with fellow students in a similar position. As time passed, these dialogues evolved into significant relationships, and I found a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Take a bold step early on, even if it seems intimidating. If you’re not quite ready right away, don’t worry—there will be a wealth of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of content was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s simple to feel overwhelmed or doubt your abilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What supported me most was reminding myself that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re having trouble grasping something, chances are others are as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for help may be one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Staff Support and Pastoral Care
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want students to succeed and exhibit understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and addressed our issues.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for the year was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it proved to be a wonderful decision. It provided me the opportunity to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My primary lesson? Make the most of the support offered—it’s designed to help you flourish.

### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I encountered before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the extensive aid from faculty, classmates, and the broader university community, I recognized that I was never truly alone. I also learned to balance stressors such as exams and deadlines with enjoyable and uplifting moments.

Reflecting on my journey, I see the significant growth I’ve experienced, both academically and personally. If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. But also realize that with time, support, and a readiness to take small leaps, you will find your footing and thrive.
