**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I got ready to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, jumping into the university experience felt like an overwhelming task. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can clearly see how much I’ve evolved and how far I’ve advanced.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may be feeling similarly. I recall spending my first day in student accommodation, retreating to my room out of nervousness, unable to step outside and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become like family to me.
What aided me was taking gradual steps, such as engaging in light conversations with others who were also feeling the same way. I realized that taking risks at the beginning of the year is worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is crucial. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and rigor was another notable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was tough, and the leap between the first and second terms was even greater. It’s easy to become disheartened or question your abilities when you observe your peers studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulties grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek help—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek assistance is perhaps the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Regarding support, the staff within the Materials department have been remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to excel and are understanding of the trials we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and offered various forms of support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support accessible until later in the year, I wish I had earlier on. At the outset, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster relationships with staff. This turned out to be an invaluable experience, and I encourage others to leverage the support and connections at their disposal. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, building rapport with the staff can significantly enhance your experience.
### Major Lessons Learned
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during my time at university—was often unwarranted. With the ample support provided by faculty and fellow students, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to manage the stress associated with exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
To anyone about to start their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take those courageous steps, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you require it. You’ll develop more than you ever thought possible.
