**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nervousness, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year scholar in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt rather intimidating. Upon reflection, I recognize that this year has been filled with personal development, challenges, and lasting memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar concerns regarding this facet of university life. I distinctly remember my first day at my student residence—I spent the whole day ensconced in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone.
Now, as I look back, I can proudly state that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I have met during this journey have grown to feel like a second family to me, both within my coursework and throughout the university. It all started with taking small steps—engaging in light, casual conversations with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was.
What did I take away from this experience? Firstly, taking the initiative early on is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be abundant icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Secondly, the most important thing is to remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term proved to be even tougher. It’s natural to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others appear to thrive.
What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that I wasn’t in this alone. Everyone was facing similar challenges, and if I was grappling with a concept, it was likely that others were as well. The crucial lesson here? Never hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or academic staff, reaching out for help is one of the most valuable skills to cultivate during your initial year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials Science faculty are. They genuinely care about student success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our queries and providing support.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made the bold move of becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual exchanges, getting to know your instructors and tutors can significantly impact your experience. My suggestion? Maximize the resources and support systems available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during the year itself—was mostly misplaced. Thanks to the ample support from staff and fellow students, I came to realize that I was never truly isolated. I also learned how to manage stressors such as exams and deadlines while still carving out moments of enjoyment.
Reflecting on the journey, my first year at Imperial has been a pivotal experience. It’s been a path of growth, resilience, and connection, and I look forward with excitement to what lies ahead as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
