**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite introverted, jumping into this new chapter felt like a daunting mission. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of fun, I can’t help but recognize the valuable lessons I’ve learned and how much I’ve evolved.

### Conquering the Friend-Making Challenge

One of the most intimidating obstacles I confronted at the university’s onset was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share the same sentiment—it’s a typical concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships. These bonds have come to represent my second family here at Imperial, beginning with simple gestures—like engaging in light conversation with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I take away from this experience? Making that first move at the year’s start is immensely rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect. Most importantly, be genuine. With a vibrant mix of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to find others who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Another significant adjustment was acclimating to the rigorous workload and heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence wasn’t always easy, particularly when I noticed others studying and felt I was falling behind.

What assisted me in this was the understanding that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I found something challenging, it was likely that others did too. The most beneficial insight I gained was the importance of asking for assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. This straightforward habit transformed my experience during the first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the Materials department is. The staff genuinely care about student success and show great empathy for the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always available to offer support.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of the most impactful decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to create connections with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and fostering these connections can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has imparted so much wisdom. Those anxious thoughts I experienced before university—and even throughout the year—were often unfounded. With a wealth of support from staff and fellow students, I realized that I was never genuinely alone.

Most crucially, I learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines while also enjoying my time. University is a period of growth, and while challenges are inevitable, the benefits of overcoming them are immeasurable.

If you’re on the verge of starting your own university adventure, know that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. Take that leap, reach out to strangers, and embrace the support surrounding you. You’ll be astounded at how much you can grow in just one year.
