**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. For any prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day at student housing, just a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to go out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. The people I’ve encountered here have come to feel like a second family to me. How did I manage to break the ice? By initiating small conversations with others who were feeling just as apprehensive as I was.
The most crucial lesson I learned was that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are countless icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Difficulties
Adapting to the demands and academic intensity was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was tough, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you witness others studying and thriving.
What aided me in persevering was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the faculty. Learning to reach out for support is one of the essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly want students to flourish and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained clear communication with us and provided various forms of support.
Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral care available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the risks I took early on, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. The assistance they provide can truly transform your experience.
### Main Takeaways from My First Year
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during my university experience—was mostly unfounded. There is an abundance of support available, from both staff and fellow students, and you are never genuinely alone in confronting your challenges.
This year has taught me how to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment. It’s been a journey of personal development, and I’m eager to see what the next chapter brings.
If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, remember: take that leap, don’t hesitate to ask for help when necessary, and most crucially, remain true to yourself. You’ve got this!
