**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and somewhat restrained, stepping into the unknown seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but consider the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

The breakthrough? Taking that initial step and engaging in simple conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with a little bravery and some casual dialogue.

So, what did I discover? First, it’s beneficial to take that initiative early on, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not ready immediately, that’s fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with people throughout the year. Secondly, always be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re bound to find others who share your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and complexities was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted and doubt your abilities in the presence of highly accomplished peers.

What assisted me was recognizing that I wasn’t the only one—everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled to grasp something, likely, others were facing the same difficulties. The crucial lesson here? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching faculty, reaching out for help can truly make a difference.

### The Significance of Supportive Staff

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They sincerely want students to thrive and genuinely understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering valuable guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. One of my best decisions was to become a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My main takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the vast support provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve discovered how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and connection.

Starting university is a significant milestone, but it also represents a chance for remarkable growth. If you’re about to embark on your own journey, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal—but also recognize that you will find your way, build meaningful relationships, and uncover just how much you can achieve.
